This is THE Summer!
Not Just Any Ordinary Summer...
By: Kiley Sabatino
HAPPY SUMMER! If you know me at all, you know that I live for summer. I'm pretty sure that I started counting down the days to Memorial Day in February, with over 90 days to go. Well, summer has finally arrived and I'm loving it! Love the sun, love the beach, love the fresh foods, outside runs, flip flops, iced coffee, bbqs...love it all! Especially THIS summer. THIS is THE summer! Aren’t you glad I’m telling you this in June so that you can fully take advantage of THE summer?!
What am I talking about? Winter always seems to last years for me, while summer flies by. I can already tell that this summer is going to go by fast, so I’m inviting you to take advantage of it while it lasts! How? SO many possibilities! Be outside more than inside, be a "locavore," play hooky and take your family to the beach, bbq often and eat outside, in your beachwear, and of course, try new things!
For me, in addition to other new and fun summer adventures, this is my "summer of 5k's." I was always jealous of those "5k people," you know, those people that just run 5ks on weekends like it's no big deal. I never knew I had it in me, honestly, but I decided it was now or never and that THIS summer, I was going to become one of those people.
My goal for my first 5k back in April was just to finish; walk, run, skip, hop, didn't matter to me as long as I finished. I jogged it, chatting with my girlfriend Abigial, (5k person) but we ran to the end and I proved to myself that I can be a 5k person too.
This past weekend, I ran my second 5k and my goal was not just to finish, but to do my best. Not knowing what exactly that meant, when the race started, I ran. My adreniline kicked in and I started passing people. I kept passing people. Before I knew it, I was two miles down and a little over one to go. I had passed a lot of people. I was TIRED. My motivation shifted from wanting to go and go and pass people in front of me to simply not wanting those that I had passed from then passing me! So I kept running. Although it wasn't easy, I kept my pace. That last mile was TOUGH, a challenge both physically and mentally, but I had given myself no choice but to do my best and I knew I'd regret it if I didn't pass the finish line at my best. My motivation at this point was not to let myself down, so I kept pushing.
When I finished and finally caught my breath, I knew I had become a REAL 5k person. I did my best and it felt good. Then, just a few minutes later, being there to cheer my mom on as she passed the finish line was double good.

How cool is it that my mom came to visit and decided last minute to run too?! Me, I had mentally prepared for my summer of 5k's but she just jumped the bandwagon and did her best. So whether you're a planner and train for an event or you just hop on board last minute, I highly suggest you join me this summer to try something new, challenge yourself, push your fitness limits, team up with a friend, (or your mom!) and take advantage of THIS summer! Why wait another 346 days til next summer when you can make THIS summer YOUR summer?!
Stay fit and make it a summer to remember!
