A Letter from the Managing Editor: The Power of Yes

By Jenny Steadman October 9, 2015
I love publishing this newsletter. I spend the month gathering content, taking suggestions from you and I try to put together solid information that will help you and your family on your path to wellness. This monthly column is to let you know I am here with you! I'm a mom with young children, a crazy schedule, I don't get enough sleep and have trouble eating well. We are in this together and, as a team, we can improve our lives, our families and our communities.

A few weeks ago at our elementary school curriculum night, our PTO president talked about how lucky we are to live in a “yes” community. When we wanted to add a salad bar to the lunchroom last year, we asked and were told, “yes.” When we wanted to continue to expand on nutrition education, we asked and were told, “yes.” When we wanted to have a more elaborate recycling and waste education program, we asked and were told, “yes.” When we need help with our children, whether in school or at home, we ask and someone will say, “yes.”

I took a lot of what she said, and what I have experienced, to heart and have tried to apply it to my own life. Aside from our school lunch program, as I forge ahead in my Macaroni Kid business and also start a new health coaching company, I have found that in order to grow, I have to get out of my comfort zone and start asking for things. Just like all of those questions we asked about school lunch, I have been asking for business growth opportunities from other businesses, subscribers and clinical practitioners. People keep saying, “yes.”

What does this have to do with Family Fitness and Wellness? Health isn’t all about what you eat, how you move and how you sleep. Health is a holistic journey that includes your own growth as a person whether in your business, at home or in your community. When you feel as though you are a significant contributor to things important to you, your emotional well-being is boosted which, in turn, boosts your physical well-being.

What is important to you? What is in your life that you wish you could improve? Is it part of your business? Something at your child’s school, an organization or event in your community? Get involved and if you have an idea about a change or improvement, don’t just think about it or complain, ask if you can help be part of the change. Rally support from like-minded community members because you never have to do anything alone.

Bear with me this month as I’m feeling really personal. As I come off of a pretty big month of “yes” in my business and community life and dive into struggles in my personal life, I have a lot to share!

I hope that you can relate to my stories. I always want to hear from you, the goods and the bads, the pretties and the uglies. What is going on in your journey? Comment below or email me, whether you want to share with the larger Family Fitness & Wellness community or just want to share a story with me. I love to hear from you!

Until next month,
Jenny
