K: Thanks so much for joining us, Terra! As you know, March is National nutrition month. Macaroni Kid is all about enriching life for moms and families. We’ve always been passionate about health and fitness, but in 2012, we’re getting even more serious about these issues. I know you’re an expert on wellness and nutrition and I’m so happy to interview you for our Family Fitness newsletter! So, welcome!
TW: So happy to be here!
K: Let's get started. One of the hardest tasks is being “supermarket savvy” and smart about our snack and meal choices. A lot of us are on the go and find ourselves grabbing junk food throughout the day. Do you have any healthy snacking advice?
TW: This is a perfect topic for National nutrition month! On-the-go snacks often have empty calories or high fat. Choosing snacks such as fruits, veggies, and lean protein is best for getting extra nutrients throughout the day. I suggest packing raw veggies in containers. My other favorites are convenient fruit smoothies, which kids love too, protein bars, and nuts and seeds.
K: What are some small changes you suggest for busy moms trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle?
TW: Lots of moms are looking for budget-friendly ideas. I’m a big fan of just-picked produce and encourage moms to go to their local farmers markets. Just-picked produce at your local farmers market is more affordable and packed with nutrients.
Another small change is using filtered water; you can save $600 a year by using filtered tap water instead of bottled water.
K: Great advice, definitely doable changes that really make an impact. I know you’ve done some work focused on preventing childhood obesity. How about changes for the whole family?
TW: I’d say the most valuable change is learning how to cook. Take a cooking class, or two, or three! Invite your children into the kitchen and learn together. Go to the grocery store together to get ingredients and teach them about healthy foods. Integrate healthy tips when you cook together.
K: Definitely, cooking’s a great way to learn healthy foods and to bond with your family!
TW: Exactly, good for the relationship too!
K: We want to know, what’s your favorite way to stay fit?
TW: I just love to go walking outside. It never gets old. I do go to the gym a few times a week, but I love heading outside and walking or jogging, nothing too intense, just enjoying being outside.
K: Absolutely! Great, thanks so much for your time, Terra, it was so great to talk to you!
TW: Thank you as well and I look forward to seeing the story in Family Fitness! For more information, you can go to my website terrawellington.com
