Think Clearer: 10 Purposeful Breaths

One minute to a clearer mind

By Jenny Steadman September 13, 2013
As parents, it is easy for us to get caught up in the passionate outbursts of our children. I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about... they are screaming at each other, and at you, and then you start screaming, too. I know how quickly I become part of the problem. Parenting can be stressful and exhausting, both things that make it very hard to think clearly. When we are able to think clearly, we are able to manage ourselves better and think twice before we get involved in the arguments started by the little bosses in our house.

Recently I started taking yoga and I have found a class that is mostly meditation. I was skeptical at first but it only took one time for me to be absolutely hooked. You can try to find one in your area but there are things you can do at home to help clear your mind.

When is the last time you were able to take 10 Purposeful Breaths?
Never?
I believe it.

Here is my challenge for you:

Today, tomorrow and the day after that, find one minute of quiet. Lock yourself in the bathroom or a closet if you have to.

Sit or lie down comfortably
Close your eyes
Try to clear your mind. Don't think about laundry, dinner or what the kids are doing.
Now, take ten deep, long breaths.

Inhale until your lungs can hold no more, your ribs expand and your spine grows taller.
Exhale until there is no more air to expel.

Do this just ten times.

I promise that when you open your eyes your entire body will feel lighter and your head will be clearer.
It is an instant do-over for an otherwise stressful day.

Think the kids won't let you get away for even one minute? Have them do it with you! With just a little practice, you will all benefit from doing this together.
