A New Label Coming to Your Foods - Glyphosate Residue Free

By Jenny Steadman March 9, 2018

Nowadays, it feels like we need a decoder to understand what all of the labels on our food mean. There's gluten-free, vegan, kosher, cage-free, free-range, grass-fed, hormone-free, Non-GMO Project, natural, organic... the list goes on and on and on, and it's about to get longer.

Pretty soon you will start seeing a label that says Glyphosate Residue Free. My goodness, that is a mouthful! What exactly does this mean, anyway? Is it a good thing if a good is Glyphosate Residue Free? Does it even matter?

If you are looking to avoid pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), then yes. Glyphosate is a herbicide that is commonly used on GMO crops and is the active ingredient in the weed-killer Roundup. What's the problem with glyphosate? In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (which is part of the World Health Organization [WHO]), listed it as a probable carcinogen.

While there is still debate as to whether it really does cause cancer, some farmers and food manufacturers are not taking their chances. Through The Detox Project, businesses can get their product certified as Glyphosate Residue Free and earn the right to use the label on their packaging.

More and more, consumers are looking for transparency. People want to know how their food is grown. They want to know what they are eating and this is another great step in that direction.
