May is National Wine Month and is a great time to stop for a moment and ask yourself if you know your grapes as well as you think you do. Even without the added excuse to celebrate this occasion, more than 78 million Americans will raise a glass this month for taste and pleasure. While many wine drinkers know about the heart-health benefits of red wine, several are unaware that 100% grape juice made with Concord grapes can help support a healthy heart.
In fact, a Porter Novelli Styles study conducted on behalf of Welch’s® surveyed more than 4,000 adults and found that, 66% of those surveyed know that their glass of wine is good for their heart. Only a fraction of the participants connected the heart-health benefits of grapes in wine to the grapes used to make 100% grape juice.
Research suggests that in addition to the alcohol, plant nutrients (polyphenols) in red wine may play a role in supporting heart health, and many of these same polyphenols can be found in grape juice made with Concord grapes. To build on that, over a decade’s worth of research suggests that 100% grape juice made with Concord grapes can benefit the heart.
Welch’s 100% grape juice made with Concord grapes is a healthy and tasty addition to a heart-healthy diet. Each 4-oz. glass counts as one serving (½ cup) of fruit and is a convenient way to incorporate more purple fruit into your day. Celebrate a healthy heart this month with a Welch’s grape juice mocktail, like the Grapria.
