Real Life Fitness Stories: The Neubauers

August 11, 2017

We want to hear from you! If you've jumped on the bandwagon, you can inspire others to do the same. Whether you're a personal trainer or play Wii Fit with your kids, you're part of the family fitness revolution. If you've made fitness a priority for you and your family, we want to know about it. I want to feature your story, your successes, challenges, and tips.

All you have to do is answer these questions and email the answers to jennys@macaronikid.com. Please send a photo we can use, too.

Can't wait to hear from you and be inspired by YOUR story!

What is your name and what town are you from?
We are the Neubauers! We are from Pflugerville, TX (a suburb of Austin) recently transplanted to Sammamish, WA (a suburb of Seattle).

Who makes up your family?
Mark (dad), Mary (mom), Mia (7) and Jude (5) complete our family.

Briefly, tell us your struggles.
Growing up, my husband was super athletic. He played varsity baseball and was a collegiate volleyball player. I was quite the opposite. Good genes kept me thin but not necessarily lean and toned. I sucked at P.E. and never did complete those presidential miles. I figured I just wasn't made for running. Or lifting. Or anything super physical.

What was the turning point that made you change the way you care for yourself?
After a miscarriage, I vowed that I would not make pregnancy a priority in my life. I happened to be in a running shoe store in Texas and saw a flyer for a local running group training for the Austin marathon. It said, "All experience levels." I had never even run a full mile in my life up to that point, but I thought, "Hey, why not? Sign me up for the half marathon!"

How have you implemented (or plan to) your new habits with your family?
My husband and I sign up for races periodically throughout the year which helps to keep us on track. Our emphasis on a healthy lifestyle naturally rubs off on our children. We've also gone out of our way to enroll them in schools that emphasize a healthy diet to nourish a healthy mind. Also, kids have so many interests it is sometimes hard to narrow down the sports to just 1-2 a season! We also like to encourage free play and let them out to roam the block on their bikes. They are pros now and can ride their bikes for a few miles while we jog alongside!
