What is your name and what town are you from? Abby Herman, Rossville, IN

Who makes up your family? Myself, Husband (Corby), 16-month-old (TJ) and Brody (our Scottish terrier).

Briefly, tell us your struggles. Having tried regular doctors, specialists, and alternative medicine for five years without success, I decided to go to Mayo Clinic in April 2015. Even with some diagnoses (thyroid problems, allergies, bladder spasms) and treatments, I was not getting better and felt like my health crisis had taken away my ability to live life (chronic fatigue, insomnia, headaches, back pain, food sensitivities) as a healthy 35-year-old.

What was the turning point that made you change the way you care for yourself? That fall, a friend shared some new supplements with me that focused on blood sugar balance and gut health (I had no idea these are the root causes of so many health issues) and things began to improve. Within 3 weeks my thyroid levels were better on my bloodwork and over time my other symptoms all began to fade. I started living without pain, full of energy, sleeping through the night, no more sugar/salt cravings, my hair, skin, and nails were all stronger, and I had no more allergic reactions. Adjusting to clean eating habits, being more active, and replacing over the counter meds with natural options were next steps and before long, even our extended family members were making the same changes.

In April, I found out I was expecting. What a surprise, since doctors said my prior health issues would make that a challenge! My pregnancy was a breeze with few of the typical complaints most women have. Post pregnancy, the weight came off easily. I feel vibrant and able to fully enjoy motherhood. 

How have you implemented (or plan to) your new habits with your family? My skeptical husband has become a faithful supplement user and recently took up martial arts to feel better. My son has been medication free since birth and we use natural options for teething, immune health, and daily life. When others in our family come over, they know we're going to have healthy (but tasty!) food options. Being able to help others find the same simple routine and lifestyle to better health and happiness became my passion and my work-from-home business grew to allow me to resign my full-time social work job. Now I can contribute to our household income without missing out on the priority of being a parent. I feel like I finally have the American dream to be able to make ends meet and put family priorities first. What a double blessing to have health and financial stability! I would never have guessed that one small decision to switch a brand of health products would become a catalyst for a complete lifestyle change, but I'm so happy it did.
