Joy in a Jar: Practicing Mindfulness with Your Family

By Joanie Barr April 5, 2019

The idea of Joy in a Jar is to celebrate the fun and happy memories within your family, connect with each other, and find a way to be in the now by writing down things that brought you joy during your day. Oftentimes we can get carried away with the day-to-day busy schedules and a million to-dos on our list. Joy in a Jar is a beautiful way to stay present with each other.

It's also a great and easy way to manage stress. Stress manages to find a way to enter everyone’s life. Too much of it can take a toll on your health. Joy in a Jar is a mindful practice that reminds you to be grateful for the good things in life. A mindfulness practice like Joy in a Jar can help not only with stress reduction, but also help improve attention, regulate emotions, feel compassion, bond with your family, and interact with each other in a positive way. Joy in a Jar is a practice you can start with your family, friends, or even co-workers.

Here's how to create your Joy in a Jar:

  1. Make sure the jar is somewhere visible. Ours is in our kitchen. Don't have a jar? You can use anything! Consider a gift bag or shoe box, for instance.
  2. Have a notepad and pen conveniently placed near the jar.
  3. Have a conversation during dinner to discuss memories of the day that brought you joy.
  4. Encourage your family to add a note to the jar with their joyful memories or blessings for others.
  5. Read through the jar every once in a while for family fun and engagement! You'll likely be surprised at how much joy it brings you.
