Real Life Fitness Stories: Meet Cari

A wellness story from a parent just like you!

February 7, 2020

What is your name and where are you from?

Cari from Spring, Texas

Who makes up your family?

My husband Aaron, daughter Leanna (6), son Coragan (21), and me.

Tell us about your struggles.

I struggle with time management. I have to work, and I’m lucky to work from home. I want to do all the things, and have fun. But finding time to do it all is a struggle. Especially if we want to do things as a family since our work schedules are crazy.

What was the turning point that made you change the way you care for yourself?

Being told by my doctor that I was pre-diabetic was my eye-opener. I knew I had to make changes!

How have you implemented your new habits?

I include my family in everything. I have to eat low carb, but I still make sides that they can eat. They shouldn’t feel like they have to give up things just because of me.

When it comes to snacks, they get food they like, but I don’t really enjoy, so I’m not tempted to eat them. When we go on bike rides, we go as a family or they will ride while I run. Sometimes my daughter will choose to run with me the last quarter mile. She is learning to have fun while getting fit. It’s special time together.

I also bring my daughter to work out with me at CampGladiator. She can either work out with us or play. She’s made friends, learned leadership, seen hard work, and the value of a community that supports each other and helps push each other.

It also helps that I have found an accountability partner and we work out together. Our daughters also became friends, and instead of texts that say, “Are you going to camp today?” I get texts that say, “Olivia wants to know if she will see Leanna today?” So without even knowing it, our kids are keeping us accountable, and it’s all just fun!

I tried running, which I love/hate. I tried the gym, but I rarely go. Finding a program that worked for me (and my crazy schedule), was the ultimate game-changer. I found CampGladiator and it was exactly what I needed! I can go any day, and there are so many time options and locations, that unless I have something major planned, there is no reason not to show up! I realized I had to find something that I truly enjoyed in order to stick with it. I still have work to do, but at least the process is fun!
