Real Life Fitness Stories: Meet Martine

'I needed to dedicate time for myself, away from my family, in order to become a better mother'

September 4, 2020

What's your name, and where are you from?

I'm Martine Stefanovic and I live in McDonough, Ga. I am the publisher of Macaroni Kid Stonecrest - Conyers - Covington, Ga.

Tell us about your family:

My family includes my amazing husband of almost nine years, my son who is seven years old, my daughter who just turned five years old, and my phenomenal mother who is with us seasonally.

Tell us about how you struggled with fitness and exercise:

My struggle with exercise began after I gave birth to my second child almost two years after having my son. I’ve always enjoyed working out and fitness. However, when I quickly became a stay-at-home-mother of two young babies, fitness took a backseat almost immediately.

What was the turning point that made you change the way you care for yourself?

I was not happy with the person I saw in the mirror. Most importantly, mentally I knew something was not right. Being home with two small children who depend on me for their survival was TOUGH for me!

I needed to dedicate time for myself, away from my family, in order to become a better person/mother/wife. That's when I started walking around my neighborhood as a form of exercise both physically and mentally.

What about now? What do you love to do for fitness and exercise?

Now, I am doing great on sticking to a routine, even with our local COVID restrictions. I can confidently say walking helped save my mind. I am a member of 99 Walks, which is an amazing community of women who take intentional walks throughout the month to reach a personal set goal. What is so great about this program is the support and encouragement I give and receive. Not to mention, if you meet your goal, you receive a beautiful congratulatory bracelet in the mail.

How has your family been impacted by your healthy habits?

My family loves it. I am sure by now my husband can tell based on my mood if I’ve been on a walk or not. When I can’t get away for a solo walk, we take walks together, which is a great bonding experience. The kids get their wiggles out and sometimes my husband and I take a walk into our date-night.
